Ashura is observed on the 10th of Moharram of Arabic calendar by Shia Muslim community of Bangladesh. On the occassion of Ashura, Tajia procession is brought out from Husseni Dalan of Old Dhaka and paraded the city streets. The day is observed by the Muslims with religious veneration through fasting, prayers and rituals. Ashura commemorates the tragedy in Karbala desert where Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), embraced martyrdom along with his family members and followers on the 10th of Muharram in Hijri 61 (AD 680). The day is a public holiday.
